Biographical Timeline


1954 - born November 5, in Charleston, South Carolina
1967 - form pop group, The Soul Seekers, with sister Nina, in Taipei, Taiwan
     performs for dances at school and youth clubs; an original song was performed by the group on Armed Forces Radio
1968 - at vocal music director Richard Sheere's urgings, joins Seaside High Chamber Choir.
     begins developing a serious approach to singing
1970 - joins Up With People, an international musical revue, as a principal vocal soloist
     completes senior year of high school while traveling (a Up With People High School graduate)
1971 - performs several solos on "The Up With People Show" LP, recorded live in Tacoma, Washington
1972 - tours Italy; records soundtrack for a Sears TV commercial, which debuted during Munich Olympics telecast
     leaves Up With people, returns to Monterey
1973 - takes post as music minister with a Catholic Church; arranging music for vocal group
     begins practicing piano to enhance arranging and songwriting
     performs first club engagement in Monterey; performing all styles of songs
1974 - sits in with all-star band, featuring Art Pepper, Eugene Wright, Blue Mitchell, & Jack Sheldon; Pepper and Wright offer advice, encouragement
1975 - performs first solo club engagement, accompanying himself on piano
     works as jingle singer and arranger
1978 - opens for Richard Pryor's appearance in Monterey
     enters songwriting partnership with Peter J. McQuade; together they compose over 40 songs
1982 - relocates to San Jose, begins performing in San Francisco bay area
     works as dance accompanist at DeAnza College; also acts as musical director for summer theatre productions
1986 - contracts meningitis, loses speech; spends six weeks re-learning to talk and sing
1987 - upon recovery, decides to focus on singing jazz; completes pop and 'request room' commitments at the end of year
     meets Tup Lohse; together they form TuSco, begin working on an LP
1988 - records Too Much Fun! at Fantasy Studios; performs release party/concerts in Monterey and San Francisco
1989 - performs showcases in New York City and Hollywood     
     has guest appearance in film, "Bad Jim"
     performs at the Monterey Jazz Festival
1990 - performs with Dave Brubeck at a 70th birthday celebration in Brubeck's birthplace, Concord CA
     Too Much Fun! is placed on Best-Jazz Recordings-of the Year in USA Today
1991 - narrates, directs and stars in Tup Lohse's revue, "What Is This Thing Called Jazz?"
1993 - performs as guest soloist in REJOICE! REJOICE!, an African-American Jazz Worship Service with choir, instrumental septet
1995 - records live concert, released as rhythm, reason & rhyme in 1996
1996 - begins performing and teaching in Asia
2000 - records a CD of original compositions, entitled with angel love, produced by contemporary artist Tei Kobayashi
     with Mark Hodgkins, forms the Bangkok International Big Band; performs as featured vocalist
     records with Bangkok International Big Band; released on CD as In Time Out
2001 - records duo session with pianist Cedar Walton, in New York City
2003 - present - continues to perform and teach throughout Asia
